What is Religious Trauma?

Religious trauma is not just “bad church experiences.” It happens when spiritual beliefs, communities, or religious systems cause ongoing fear, shame, disconnection, or harm and can impact:

  • identity

  • self worth

  • relationships

  • sexuality/gender identity

  • trust

  • emotional safety

  • connection to self and spirituality

Religious Trauma may sound like:

  • “I’m afraid I’m a bad person.”

  • “I feel guilty for setting boundaries.”

  • “I don’t know who I am outside of my religion.”

  • “I was taught my emotions were sinful.”

  • “I’m terrified of rejection or punishment.”

  • “I lost my community when I started asking questions.”

Religious trauma is not just a spiritual issue. It effects:

  • anxiety

  • panic

  • shame

  • perfectionism

  • hypervigilance

  • difficulty trusting yourself

  • fear around sexuality/intimacy

  • chronic guilt

  • dissociation

All of this happens when love, safety, and belonging are conditional.
