What is Religious Trauma?
Religious trauma is not just “bad church experiences.” It happens when spiritual beliefs, communities, or religious systems cause ongoing fear, shame, disconnection, or harm and can impact:
identity
self worth
relationships
sexuality/gender identity
trust
emotional safety
connection to self and spirituality
Religious Trauma may sound like:
“I’m afraid I’m a bad person.”
“I feel guilty for setting boundaries.”
“I don’t know who I am outside of my religion.”
“I was taught my emotions were sinful.”
“I’m terrified of rejection or punishment.”
“I lost my community when I started asking questions.”
Religious trauma is not just a spiritual issue. It effects:
anxiety
panic
shame
perfectionism
hypervigilance
difficulty trusting yourself
fear around sexuality/intimacy
chronic guilt
dissociation
All of this happens when love, safety, and belonging are conditional.
If this resonates with you,
Your questions are allowed.
You are not “too sensitive.”
You deserve safety.
Healing and new ways of meaning-making are possible.
